As soon as the marriage of a boy and girl is fixed the whole friend circle and relatives are moved by a wave of happiness. This happiness turns into ecstasy when they get the first good news about the newly wed. The whole family, including family and relatives start showeringtheir affection by suggesting names for the newborn. While the parents of the yet to be born feel that they are responsible for choosing the name of the baby. Unfortunately, many a times the cultural background of a name is forgotten while keeping the name.

Mrs. Triveni Pauranik has not only suggested ten thousands names but given their expected social meanings. I feel that this book must be presented to all the couples on their wedding. There is an Indian tradition of “god bharai’ in which the boy's parent keep a beautiful toy boy in the lap of the would be daughter-in-law. I wish to emphasize that a doll should also be placed. Than will be an indication that whoever comes in the world, be it a boy or a girl, he or she should be welcomed in the same manner. And with that this book should be accompanied for the new born.

“नामायन” नामक यह पुस्तक व्यावहारिक दृष्टि से बहुत उपयोगी तो है ही, अपने आप में बहुत रोचक भी है। इसका शीर्षक “नामायन' ही यह बताता है कि लेखक-त्रय की प्रतिभा की उड़ान कितनी उंची है। रामायण की तरह नामायन शीर्षक से यह संकेत मिल जाता है कि यदि कोई अपने नवजात शिशु का सुंदर और सार्थक नाम रखना चाहे तो वह नामायन की शरण में चला जाए।

लगभग दस हजार भारतीय नामों का यह अच्छा संकलन है। उन नामों के अर्थ भी दिए गये हैं । उनके रोमन में शुद्ध उच्चारण भी लिखे गये हैं। नामों की संख्या 10 हजार क्‍या, एक लाख भी हो सकती है। हिन्दी में पर्यायवाची शब्द अंग्रेजी से कई गुना ज्यादा हैं। यदि उनके साथ संस्कृत, प्राकृत, पाली, अरबी, फारसी, तथा आधुनिक भारतीय भाषाओं में नामों को उठाया जाए और उनको रोमन लिपि में भी छाप दिया जाए तो मैं समझता हूं कि सभी महाद्वीपों के निवासी, ऐसे विश्व-नामायन के पीछे भागने लगेंगे | भारतीय संस्कृति सारे विश्व को लाभान्वित करने लगेगी।

इस पुस्तक की प्रस्तावना तो अद्भुत है। गागर में सागर भर दिया है। लेखकों ने जो तर्कसंगत और सारगर्भित बात है, उसी को माना है। इस पुस्तक की लेखकीय प्रस्तावना पढ़कर पाठकों को वह दृष्टि मिलेगी, जो हर माता-पिता के पास अपने शिशुओं का नाम करते समय होनी चाहिये।

"Namayan' is not only a practically useful book but is very interesting too. It's title “Namayan” represents the talent of the trio. Like the famous epic Ramayan, Namayan indicates that those who want to keep beautiful and meaningful names of their children, can rely totally on this book. It is a beautiful compilation of ten thousand Indian names. The beauty is not just the names but their meanings. The number of names can vary from ten thousand to ten Lac because the number of synonyms in Hindi in many times more than English. If we combine Sanskrit, Prakrit, Pali, Arbi, Pharsi and other modern Indian languages and translate and transcribe them into Roman transcript, I feel the whole world will be benefited by it. The Indian culture will prove useful for the whole world.

The preface of this book is extraordinary. It has comprehensively covered everything about “Names” in the Indian context. Whatever the team of trio writers have expressed, they have done it logically and meaningfully. After reading this book, the parents of the newborns will get that insight which is essential for everyone.

लड़की हुई है? वाह! बधाई हो! क्या नाम रखा है ? लड़का हुआ है? बधाई, बहुत-बहुत बधाई! क्‍या नाम रखा है ? अक्सर ऐसा होता है जब किसी संतान के इस दुनिया में आने की सूचना दी जाती है तो सुनने वाला यह पूछे बिना नहीं रहता कि शिशु का नाम क्या रखा है। वह आने वाला किस नाम से जाना जाएगा यह सभी जानना चाहते हैं। एक बात और हम भारत वासियों के लिए नाम एक महज किसी को पुकारने का प्रतीक ही नहीं है, वरन् किसी व्यक्ति-विशेष का परिचय उसकी अपने सम्बन्धियों से, अपने चाहने वालों से और सर्वोपरि अपने जन्म दाताओं से जोड़ने वाली कड़ी है । ऐसी कड़ी जो पुरखों के चले जाने के बाद भी उनसे जुड़ी हुई नजर आती है।

नाम ऐसे भी होते हैं जो पैदा होने वाले की कोई खास प्रकृति का द्योतक हो, हालांकि पैदा होते ही चंद घंटों में किसी नवजात की प्रकृति का अनुमान लगाना कठिन है पर फिर भी ऐसा देखा गया है कि 'स्मिता' या 'मुस्कान' या 'हंसी' जैसे नाम बच्चे के जन्म के कुछ घंटे बाद दिये गये हैं । और जब ऐसा सुखद अपवाद सामने आये तो माता-पिता ऐसा सार्थक नाम देने से नहीं चूकते । कहने का तात्पर्य यह है कि नाम हमारी एक विशेष अस्मिता है।

नाम हमारे लिये एक बहुत महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दा है। नाम सटीक हो, सुन्दर हो, अर्थपूर्ण हो यह सबकी इच्छा होती है । सार्थकता का प्रश्न बच्चे के वातावरण, उसके अभिभावक, उसके देश, काल और मौजूदा सौरमंडल से जुड़ जाता है। और यह प्रत्येक कारण अलग-अलग नाम को जन्म दे सकता है। किसी का नाम सिग्निफिकेशन त्रिकोण का एक ऐसा बिन्दु है जो त्रिकोण के अन्य दो बिन्दुओं जैसे अर्थ एवं सन्दर्भ से जोड़ता है। अत: व्यक्ति का नाम अर्थपरक तो होता ही है वह व्यक्ति विशेष के संसार को बहुआयामी तरीके से जोड़ता भी है। नाम लेते ही अनेकों सन्दर्भ, यादें, अर्थ व सामाजिक बोध का ज्ञान हो जाता है।

कई बार ऐसा देखा गया है कि माता पिता कोई अनोखा, अद्भुत, लीक से हट कर, सबसे परे नाम देना चाहते हैं ताकि नाम और नामधारी दोनों ही अद्वितीय हों। यह इच्छा कई बरसों तक बच्चे को नाम देने में विफल होती है। मेरे अपने साथ भी कुछ ऐसा ही हुआ था । मेरे पिता तार-सप्तक के प्रसिद्ध कवि श्री भारत भूषण अग्रवाल ने अद्वितीय नाम की खोज में मुझे पांच साल तक अनामिका ही रखा । पर अब ऐसा नहीं होगा । त्रिवेणीजी की इस पुस्तक ने बहुत सी खोज आसान कर दी है। यही नहीं पुस्तक में विकल्पों की भरमार है। बच्चे की या अभिभावकों की प्रकृति, सोच, वातावरण, धार्मिक निष्ठा, देश में चल रही राजनैतिक व सामाजिक लहर या फिर किसी इष्ट या पूज्य को ध्यान में रखते हुए सैकड़ों नाम पाठक के सामने हैं । ढ़ेरों नामों में से आपको मात्र एक का चुनाव करना है।

ऐसा माना जाता है कि नामों में इतिहास छुपा होता है। देश और काल की यात्रा का कच्चा-चिट्ठा लिए होता है किसी का नाम । व्यक्ति-विशेष का नाम उसके पैदा होने के समय, उसके माता-पिता के अनुभव उनकी विचार श्रृंखला का प्रतीक होता है। यह सभी विकल्प इस पुस्तक में विद्यमान हैं । आपको बस चुनने की देर है । अब किसी बच्चे का नाम चुनने के लिये हर मित्र, हर सम्बन्धी से पूछताछ करने की जरूरत नहीं होगी। यह काम त्रिवेणीजी ने बहुत आसान कर दिया है। हाँ, परेशानी होगी तो मात्र इतनी ही कि इन सुन्दर-सुन्दर नामों की श्रृंखला में से किसी एक को चुनना पड़ेगा । परन्तु यह परेशानी बड़ी सुखद परेशानी है और इस में से बाहर निकलने की सारी प्रकिया बड़ी सुखद, मनोरंजक, एवं संतुष्टि लिये होगी । यह कामना ही नहीं वरन् मेरा पूर्ण विश्वास है कि ऐसा ही होगा।

इस पुस्तक की सारगर्भिता से मैं विशेष रूप से प्रभावित हूँ । जीवन का ऐसा कोई पहलू नहीं है जो त्रिवेणी जी से छूटा हो । बहुत ध्यान, लगन और परिश्रम से संचित की गई सामग्री आपके सामने है | हर प्रकार के लोगों की सोच, मापदंड और अवधारणाओं का ख्याल रखा गया है।

शब्दों को किस सन्दर्भ में सबसे पहले प्रयुक्त किया गया था, या फिर यह शब्द किस इष्ट का दूसरा नाम है या फिर इसको प्रयोग करने के अन्य क्या-क्या सन्दर्भ हैं, इन सब की जानकारी हर नाम के नीचे दी गई है। मैं समझ सकती हूँ कि यह काम आसान नहीं रहा होगा परन्तु त्रिवेणीजी ने और उनके सहयोगी डॉ. अपूर्व पौराणिक और डॉ. किसलय पंचोली ने इतनी कुशलता से इसे कार्यान्वित किया है कि वे तीनों प्रशंसा के पात्र हैं।

सबसे बड़ी बात है कि यह पुस्तक पूर्ण रूप से द्विभाषी कोश है। हर नाम का लिप्यान्तरण देवनागरी और रोमन में तो है ही उसका अर्थ, और अर्थ-विस्तार भी हिन्दी और अंग्रेजी में भी है। वर्तनी की शुद्धता को बनाये रखने के लिए हिन्दी के शब्दों का अंग्रेजी में सही-सही रूपांतरण करके बहुत सुविधा प्रदान की गई है। मिथकीय, पौराणिक एवं ऐतिहासिक नामों की प्रचुरता है । प्रकृति से सम्बन्धित कई नामों के बोटनिकल नाम भी दिये गए हैं। कई नामों के बाद कोष्टक में लिंग सम्बन्धी सूचना देकर बहुत अच्छा किया है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात है कि कई नए नामों का अविष्कार भी किया गया है । पुस्तक के अंत में अंग्रेजी वर्णणाला के अनुसार इन्डेक्स देने से इस संग्रह की सार्थकता बढ़ गई है। एक ही नजर में सारे नाम सिलसिलेवार देखे जा सकते हैं और साथ में दी गई पृष्ठ संख्या से उस विशेष पृष्ठ पर तुरंत पहुंचा जा सकता है।

मुझे पूर्ण विश्वास है कि पाठक इस पुस्तक को स्वयं ही नहीं पढ़ेंगे वरन् अपने सगे-सम्बन्धियों और मित्रों के बीच बांटेंगे। गोद-भराई या बेबी-शावर के लिए इससे अच्छी पुस्तक हो नहीं सकती। अंततः सबसे बड़ी खूबी इस पुस्तक की यह है कि इसके पाठक मात्र नवजात बच्चों के अभिभावक ही नहीं वरन् बुद्धिजीवी भी होंगे। यह मनोरंजकऔर उपयोगी तो है ही साथ ही साथ ज्ञानवर्धक भी है | 'नामायन' एक अनूठी पुस्तक है।

Hey, it is baby girl ! Wow, congratulations. What's her name ? Well it's a boy ? many many congratulations. What name has been chosen? It often so happens that when someone is informed about arrival of a kid in the world, it is not possible to resist the temptation to ask for the name of the baby. Everybody wants to know with what name the new comer would be known. For we Indian, a name is not merely a symbol for call for someone but much more. It is the link of the person concerned with relatives, well wishers and above all the parents. A link which appears in continuity even after the fore fathers have all gone.

For us name is an important article of address. As such, we are always careful in naming a child. It should be meaningful, attractive and dignified. It is always the wish of the elders that a name should be subtle and dignified. The question of meaningful names relatives to the childs environment, his guardians, country, period and the given solar system. And every reason can give birth to different names. Any name isa point of that significant triangle which joins the other two points with respect to meaning and reference. Therefor the name of a person apart from being full of meaning connects in multiple ways the world of a particular persons. The moment a person is called by a certain name many memories and social thinking make their appearance.

Many a times it has been observed that parents select the name of the child always from the beaten track and different from the common usage. So that name and the named person both appear different and uncommon. Such a wish fails to materialize for a long time. The same happened in my case. To begin with people started calling me 'Anamika' but, the final decision on the suitability of my name kept pending for five years. But now such cases may not happen again. Triveniji's book has made such a task easy. Not only this the book provides innumerable options.

It is generally believed that history is hidden in names. The account of certain period of human history and a country could be found in certain names. The name of a particular individual reflects the period of his birth and the experienels and thinking of his parents. All such options are present in this book. One has to only choose out of them. Now it is not necessary to consult a friend or relative. Triveniji has made the task easier. One has only to plunge into the ocean to find a suitable pearl. The whole process will make you happy and will give you a kind of contentment. I can firmly say that I am highly impressed by the meaningful content of the book. Triveniji has successfully incorporated important aspects of human life. The book exhibits the hard work and deep involvement of the author.

All the relevant information regarding the origin, meaningful and context of the world is given below each name. It is not a easy task. Triveniji and her colleagues, Dr. Apoorva Pauranik and Dr. Kislaya Pancholi have accomplished the work with great competence.

A bright aspect of the book is that it is bilingual. Every word has been presented in Hindi as well as in English. Mythological and historical names are given in abundance. Botanical names of the names related to nature are also present in the book. The gender of various names has been given in brackets. The most important point is that many new names have been created by the author. The index given according to English Alphabets at the end of the book further enhances the utility of this unique collection.

I am confident that the readers will be happy to share the religious and social aspect of the book. The bright aspect of the book is it is relevant to the people of all ages. The book is not only entertaining and useful but also aknowledge booster. 'Namayan' is an extraordinary book indeed.
