अपने रिश्तेदारों, परिचितों यहाँ तक कि अपरिचितों के शिशुओं को उनके अनुरोध पर नाम सुझाना मेरा प्रिय रूचिकर शौक, शगल रहा है। पर सुझाये गये नामों को मैंने कहीं लिख कर संग्रहित नहीं किया |

आज से दो दशक पूर्व मेरी पुत्री डॉ. किसलय पंचोली ने उसके द्वारा संकलित नामों का एक छोटा संग्रह दिखाकर मुझे कहा कि आप इन नामों के अर्थ लिखकर व्यवस्थित कर दो यह कार्य मेरे लिये अत्यंत ही रूचिकर था।

इस हेतु मैं अनेक शब्दकोशों से, धार्मिक ग्रंथों से, वानस्पतिक नामों के लिये वनस्पति शास्त्र की पुस्तकों से गुजरी। इस कार्य में मैंने बहुत आनंद प्राप्त किया। इसका श्रेय किसलय को जाता है।

घर में इस कार्य की चर्चा हुई तो मेरे पुत्र डॉ. अपूर्व पौराणिक ने परामर्श दिया कि क्यों न यह कार्य द्विभाषी किया जाये । अर्थ अंग्रेजी में भी दिये जाये । इसके लिये उसने मुझे कई पुस्तकें उपलब्ध करवाई । इस कार्य में भी मुझे अति प्रसन्‍नता का अनुभव हुआ जिसका श्रेय अपूर्व को जाता है।

एक एक नाम को लेकर शब्द कोशों से हिन्दी अर्थ, अंग्रेजी अर्थ संगत रूप में देखना, फोनेटिक चिन्ह लगाकर लिप्यन्तरण करना, कार्ड बनाना, हिन्दी वर्णमाला के अनुसार नामों को व्यवस्थित करना । व्याकरण का ध्यान रखते हुए नए नामों का सृजन करना, डॉ अपूर्व और डॉ. किसलय दोनों भाई-बहन साथ साथ या अलग-अलग अपनी व्यस्तता या सुविधानुसार मुझसे चर्चा करते, काम में रस लेते मेरे प्रिय और आत्मीय, वर्षों तक आनंद से ओतप्रोत करने वाले इस 'नामकरण' अनुष्ठान के सतत् सहयोगी और प्रेरक रहे हैं। इनके सहयोग के बिना 'नामायन' का एक सार्थक नामकोश के रूप में आकार पा लेना असम्भव था | धन्यवाद की औपचारिकता से परे, ममत्व में भींगते मेरे प्रिय और आत्मीय हैं ये दोनों बच्चे ।

मैं आभारी हूँ, अपने पति श्री कृष्णवल्लभ पौराणिक की जिन्होंने कार्ड पर नम्बरिंग करने के कार्य में प्रसन्‍नतापूर्वक भरपूर सहयोग दिया, साथ ही प्रकाशित करवाने के लिये हमेशा उत्सुकता दिखाई | मैं अपने देवर श्री कैलाश पौराणिक को धन्यवाद देती हूँ। जिन्होंने कार्ड बनाने में रूचिपूर्वक सहयोग किया।

मैं अत्यन्त कृतज्ञ हूँ अपने दामाद श्री सत्यनारायण पंचोली की जिन्होंने इस नामकोश को छपवाने की पहली सीढ़ी अर्थात् डाटा की कम्प्यूटर प्रविष्टि का कार्य प्रारम्भ करवाया और समाप्ति तक इस कार्य में जुटे रहे । आपने कुशल प्रबंधन कर कार्य को सदैव आगे बढ़ाया | संवाद बनाये रखा।

मैं आभारी हूं शब्द संयोजन के लिये आनंद कियेशन के श्री आशीश और श्री आनंद सेठ बन्धुओं की जिन्होंने टाईप सेटिंग एवं लिप्यन्तरण जैसे कठिन कार्य को भी रूचि और जिज्ञासा के साथ सम्पन्न किया।

अत्यावश्यक है प्रोफेसर श्री महेश दुबे को धन्यवाद देना। जिन्होंने पांडुलिपि को आद्योपांत पढ़ा और अनेक बिन्दुओं पर बहुमूल्य सुझाव दिये।

डॉ. संजीव नारंग का भी आभार जिन्होंने अंग्रेजी अंशों को परिमार्जित किया, तराशा, व्याकरणिक भूलों को सुधारा।

सुबोध पब्लिकेशन, दिल्ली के श्री अनिल आर्य ने अपनी बहिन मेरी पुत्रवधू डॉ श्रीमती नीरजा पौराणिक के आग्रह-अनुरोध पर प्रकाशन व्यवसाय की औपचारिकता से परे जाकर अपनेपन के साथ इस संग्रह को प्रकाशित किया । इन दोनों को आशीर्वाद के साथ आभार कृतज्ञता ज्ञापित है।

उपर्युक्त नामों के अतिरिक्त भी इस दौरान अनेक व्यक्तियों से सम्पर्क करना पड़ा, अनेक पत्र-पत्रिकाओं से भी सामग्री प्राप्त हुई । सबके नाम उचित संदर्भ देते हुए कम से दोहराना कठिन है | प्रत्यक्ष-अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से जिनका जितना भी सहयोग मिला उनके प्रति आभार।

Suggesting names to relatives, acquaintances or even strangers for their babies has always been my hobby. But I never compiled the suggested names at one place.

Around two decades back, my daughter Dr Kislaya Pancholi showcased me her small collection of names and requested me to edit it and provide for their meanings. I found the task exceedingly interesting.

For doing so I researched through numerous thesaurus, religious texts, and botanical books for botanical names. I enjoyed this task to the fullest. Credit goes to Kislaya for making me embark on this enriching journey.

When I discussed about the work, my son Dr. Apoorva Pauranik suggested to enlarge the scope by making it bilingual, so as to reach larger audience. He made me available a lot of books for the same. I enjoyed this incremental task too and | must thank Apoorv for his suggestion.

Dissecting each name, its Hindi meaning from the thesaurus, its English translation, defining its etymology, transliterating with phonetic symbols, organizing and indexing name cards, evolving new names based on the rules of grammar — Kislaya and Apoorv, as and when their busy schedule permitted them, discussed and debated. Their support and enthusiasm invigorated and inspired me, without which 'Namayan' would not have taken shape. Rather than paying customary obeisance, they are my beloved jewels and my motherly love always yearns for them.

I am grateful to my husband Mr. Krishnavallabh Pauranik for his unflinching support. Needless to say, his presence was always pacifying.

My son in law Mr Satyanarayan Pancholi, with his managerial prowess, expedited the completion of first computer generated draft. He assiduously sustained communication with the team. I am grateful to Mr. Anand Seth and his brother Mr. Ashish Seth for type setting as well as difficult transliterations work with keen interest and curiosity. Also, noteworthy is the contribution of my brother-in-law Kailash Pauranik who meticulously prepared the name cards.

The manuscript was fortunate enough to have Professor Mahesh Dubey ponder over it with his scholarly insights and suggestions. Also, Dr. Sanjeev Narang who edited and refined grammatically the English text.
